I ran a 5k in my hometown of Mt Airy, NC this weekend. It was sprinkling with occasional heavier waves of rain. And there is a steep uphill at the turnaround. That slows a lot of folks down. I managed to push through on that. Had a blast running with family though. I finished faster than my time two weeks ago which was cool! And congratulations to son’s girlfriend @_ava.zander_ for finishing 3rd in her female age group!! Had my whole family out there and two of my nephews! We had fun! #runningwithfamily #5k
Apple Watch Ultra Talk :)
In this video, I briefly discuss my switch from Garmin smartwatches to the Apple Watch Ultra. This wasn’t a change I made lightly as I’ve been a Garmin guy, even in the League of Garmin, since the beginning of my running. But I am excited about the switch!
2023 Live Life in Color 5K
Ran a color run 5K this morning for a great cause. Funds support a local Recovery Center. The Live Life in Color 5K was fun. And I got to run with two of my friends, @heatherlburke6and Jeanene Hunnicutt. I planned on running this just for fun but I was feeling so good I turned it up a notch. Finished on 6th place overall. Not too shabby after running a marathon! Support your local races! They’re fun and usually support terrific causes.
2023 Berlin Marathon
RACE RECAP! Got to my start block over an hour and a half early as I wanted to see the world record marathoner Eliud Kipchoge start. The energy at the official start was amazing and with each wave it just kept building. Check out the video below…
2023 Wilmington TriSpan 10K
Ran the 2023 TriSpan 10k this morning in downtown Wilmington. This is my runiversary race as it was the first race I ever ran in (I did the 5k option that year). It’s usually hot and muggy even at 7am. But the crowd and the views are amazing.
2023 Cupid’s Crawl 10K
FAIR WARNING…injury pics ahead if you click the Read More button below. I signed up for Cupid’s Crawl 10k. This morning temps were perfect. I was having a decent race, not my fastest, but I was doing this for fun.
At nearly the halfway point however, I had just turned left where the 10k splits off from the 5k course and heading downhill. I was speeding up and as I was passing a lady on her left I smiled and said, “Free speed!” About that time my shoe caught a spot of broken pavement and I went straight down, right knee and right hand first sliding about two feet on pavement. Talk about pain!! That kind lady and another kind runner stopped to check on me and helped me out of the road as a race volunteer rushed over and called an ambulance. I was bleeding pretty bad. Another volunteer who knows how runners think and took injury pics saying, “You’ll want these later.” She called my wife to update her and texted her the pics.
So… 8 years into running and I got my first DNF. Almost had a 5k anyway. Thank you to the EMS guys that cleaned me up and my buddy Gary Lee for bringing me home. Now I just got to heal up. Between the burning, stinging, and soreness I’m just gonna take it easy a day or two!
2022 Gobble Wobble 5K
I had a happy Thanksgiving which started with a cool 5k in my new hometown. It started at 8:30 and was in the upper 30s by then. I met an IG friend in person which is always cool too. And then afterwards I ate way too much hahaha. As many times as I’ve run a race on a thanksgiving, this is the first time I’ve gotten a medal with a turkey on it. And since I ate ham later that day, this was the only turkey I got!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2021 Richmond Half Marathon
This race for me was highlighted by friendship. It’s been 6 weeks since I ran a grueling but fun 50k and I knew my legs would have a hard time trying to PR this so I decided to run for fun and just finish before 2:30. ✅ But the best part was getting to meet several of my #trackstreet friends for dinner last night and during the race!! That’s what is so cool about running. So proud of @j781run and @jim_burrows_runs too for rocking their marathons! I appreciate our encouraging group of runners so much. You guys are the best! 😎🐝 ⛄️🏃🏻♂️🏃🏻♂️🏃🏻♂️
2021 Badwater Cape Fear 50k
Wow! What an adventure!! The morning began with a quiet and cool ferry ride in the minutes right before dawn from Southport to Bald Head Island which is only reachable by boat. We gathered around the oldest lighthouse in my home state known as Old Baldy and the tiny mosquitoes were already waking up for what I’m sure they thought was a gift of a big breakfast😂. It was already 70° at 7am. I met some awesome ultra runners as we waited, chatted and even posed for a quick appearance on The Weather Channel (I’ll post a pic from the video of us out there in my stories). This adventure actually started way back in March when my younger brother Chris talked me into joining him in this race. My sister-in-law Kim was out there taking pics and got one of Chris and I before the start. I also got a quick pic with @chriskostman , the Badwater race director.
2021 Tri-Span 10k
So proud of this woman!! Lisa ultimately just wanted to beat her training time of an hour and a half for this 10k. The TriSpan 10k is the toughest 10k I’ve ever ran as the course includes 3 bridges, 2 of which are draw bridges with the tough metal grating to run on. Each bridge is like a long hill. And then there’s the heat and humidity as you run on both sides of the Cape Fear river in downtown Wilmington. This strong woman beat her ultimate goal and set a new PR for 10k distance in her first ever 10k race by finishing it in 1 hour and 20 minutes!! That’s ten minutes faster than any of her training runs.
